How Long Does a Furnace Last? Know When You Should Replace It

Posted On: January 11, 2022

Furnace InstallationFor any homeowner, replacing a furnace can be a big investment and financial commitment. Many choose to keep hobbling along, making repairs vs. replacing, because of the initial cost.  When you consider how long modern furnaces last, the upfront cost might not seem quite as scary!

There are a few ways you can elongate the life of your furnace and Short Pump Heating & Air wanted to share some information on life expectancy.

The average lifespan of a furnace ranges between 10-30 years.  We know this seems like a wide range, but there are a lot of variables that can determine if you fall closer to 10 years or 30.  The system’s lifespan depends somewhat on the type of system, fuel source, how often it’s used and how well you take care of it.  If you’re taking proper care of your furnace system, it should definitely last longer than 10 years.  Most systems today initially come with a standard 10-year parts warranty.  Electric furnaces can last from 20-30 years and gas furnaces generally last between 15-20 years, and don’t last quite as long as oil or electric furnaces, but they do tend to warm your home the fastest.  Oil furnaces’ fuel source is a bit harder to come by in 2022, but they generally last 15+ years.

Some common signs that it’s time to replace your furnace vs. repair include age, noise level, energy bill spikes and temperature shifts.  If your furnace is 20+ years old, and starts having issues, you may want to consider just replacing it.  Newer models on the market tend to run more efficiently and offer better comfort features.  When a furnace ages, it has to work harder to bring the same amount of heat to a home.  This harder effort often produces a noisier system and is a sign that it might be time to replace it.  If you notice shifts in temperatures throughout your home, it may be an indicator of a declining furnace.  Same with energy bill increases.

If you’re unsure whether it’s time to repair or replace your furnace, it’s important you call Short Pump Heating & Air to confirm one way or the other.  Even after your warranty is up, we recommend annual maintenance and won’t recommend replacing a new system unless it’s really on the way out and best for your needs.  Call 804-364-9040 to get a free quote or assessment today!
