Preparing for Winter Begins in the Fall: Maintenance Checklist

Homeowners should conduct any HVAC maintenance, repairs, and assessments now before winter sets in and demand on the system increases.

The last thing you’d want is your boiler to go out on Thanksgiving with the family in town and food on the table. With that in mind, here are several tips you might want to consider:

Tip #1: Have an SPHA Expert Technician Check Your HVAC System

The first step to prevention is an inspection. Ideally, you’ll want the system checked twice a year: once in the spring and again in the fall right before winter.

Our technicians can assess your system and offer any recommendations they deem necessary to make sure your system is efficient and can withstand a long winter. This could include conducting routine maintenance, making minor repairs, or even replacing a part or the entire unit.

Tip #2: Perform Regular Maintenance on the HVAC Unit

A system is much more efficient when you remember to do the little things. For example, it’s important to replace your air filters every month, as a dirty or clogged filter will make the system work harder and be less efficient.

Checking your thermostat accuracy, or installing programmable thermostats, is another way to ensure your building is heated at the right temperature, and your system isn’t being overworked.

Tip #3: Replace Equipment When Necessary

Unfortunately, even if you do all the necessary maintenance and repairs on HVAC equipment, it will eventually need to be replaced. Did you know a furnace or boiler that’s 10 years old may only be half as efficient as a new one that’s installed today?

After 10 years, you might want to have a discussion with Short Pump Heating & Air to see if a replacement makes the most sense to save on utility bills and repairs.

Whether you’re looking to repair your equipment or replace it altogether, Short Pump Heating & Air can apply a temporary solution to ensure there isn’t a gap in your home’s heating now that winter is just around the corner.
