What Are BTUs?
If you are researching new air conditioners, you probably have seen or heard the words “tonnage” or “BTU” many times. They describe the cooling capacity of the air conditioner.
BTU, an acronym for British Thermal Unit, is a measurement of the amount of heat that can be removed from a room per hour. The size of an air conditioning system is usually referred to as “tonnage.” A 2-ton or 3-ton air conditioning system is a common size for residential systems. Each ton is equal to 12,000 BTUs. The higher the BTU or tonnage, the more cooling capacity the air conditioner has.
