Short Pump Heating & Air wants to share some of the most common plumbing problems we see in Richmond and how to avoid them this summer.

  1. Summer foods: Many of the foods more commonly cook in summer (burgers on the grill, fresh fruit, corn on the cob, etc.) don’t always agree with your garbage disposal. Be mindful of what you’re putting down the garbage disposal to avoid foods that will jam or clog it. When in doubt, just throw it out.
  2. Pets in the summer: Most furry pets shed in the summer, so you want to be sure you avoid that fur or hair getting down in your drains and clogging the pipes. It’s best to brush your pets regularly and avoid bathing them in your bathtubs, if possible.
  3. Sprinkler season: If you haven’t already had your spring maintenance to check on your sprinkler system post-winter, there’s still time! This will ensure you don’t have bigger plumbing issues if the system isn’t working properly. Also avoid mowing over the heads of sprinklers and be careful that sprinkler tubing isn’t exposed for animals to chew on.
  4. Travel plans: Before setting off for your summer vacation, you’ll want to ensure your plumbing system is ready for your absence. Turn your water heater down to low, pilot, or vacation setting, so energy isn’t wasted heating unused water. If you’ll be away longer than a week, consider turning off your water main or draining your pipes and tank. Check your appliances for cracked or loose hoses, leaks, or other issues to avoid major problems while you’re away. Lastly, arrange for a friend or neighbor to check on your house and make sure everything is OK. If there’s a big storm or issue while you’re away, it will be even more costly and messy if a plumbing issue is left unattended.
