We realize that choosing a company to service or replace your HVAC systems is a big decision. When letting someone into your home and around your family, you want to be sure the company has trustworthy, clean, honest, and respectful technicians.  Here are 10 helpful questions to ask your potential HVAC service provider.

  1. Is regular preventive maintenance worth it?
Most companies, and more importantly, their customers, will tell you YES. People who invest in regular maintenance of their HVAC units experience far fewer problems and costly repairs vs. those who don’t.  With Short Pump Heating & Air, we offer semi-annual and annual maintenance plans, which provide our customers with not only a full inspection and cleaning of their system but other benefits as well. Some additional benefits include no additional cost for after-hours or weekend emergencies, priority service during peak demand, and a 15% discount on any HVAC repairs. Be sure to ask your HVAC company the benefits that come with being a maintenance customer.
  2. My unit breaks down quite often. Should I get it repaired or buy a new one?
If your HVAC unit is more than a decade old and repair costs are significant, it may be time to replace it. Spending the money on repairing it could be much better spent on a new system, which will be under warranty for the next 10 years with proper maintenance.  If you have an older system and expensive repairs are needed, it is always a good idea to find out the cost to replace the unit rather than repair it. Be sure to ask if your company is running any discounts or financing specials on new systems, and compare the new system costs to your current life expectancy and repair cost.
  3. How long does a new AC unit last?
Most new HVAC systems will last about 12-15 years, assuming the system is properly maintained. The manufacturer’s warranty is 10 years on most new residential systems. Neglecting maintenance on your system could cut down on the life expectancy, and can increase the cost and frequency of repairs over time. Neglecting maintenance can also void certain warranties.
  4. Is there any way to cut down on my utility bills?
In the summer, keep your air conditioner at a reasonable temperature. You can use a programmable or Wi-Fi thermostat to regulate temperatures throughout the day or when on vacation. It is important to keep your air conditioning filters and coils clean. It will also help your bill if you take advantage of natural ventilation when possible, and block the sun with blinds or drapes during the peak sun hours of the day.
In the winter, use a programmable or WIFI thermostat, replace old holiday lights with LEDs, make sure you have adequate insulation, find and seal air leaks, lower your water heater’s temperature, and open your curtains in the daytime to allow the sun’s warmth into your home. If you find yourself with a high electric bill this season, call Short Pump Heating & Air to talk with someone about possible issues and solutions.
  5. How should I pay for the repairs/replacement of my system?
Most companies will expect a payment on the spot or possibly bill you after the work has been done. Be sure to ask for an estimate of the cost, including the options for payment. Some companies may offer financing options for more costly repairs. We offer many no-interest financing payment options.
  6. How much experience does the technician servicing my home have?
Be sure to ask who will be servicing your home, how they hire their technicians, and how they are trained. Most companies perform background checks,  require that their technicians have certain certifications, and hold a standard of who they will allow into their customers’ homes.
  7. What kind of impact will a repair or replacement of my HVAC system have on my utility bills?
In certain instances, repairing a broken HVAC system can cut down significantly on energy usage. Dirty coils and certain breakdowns can spike electric usage. The repair will get the utility costs back to where they were when the system was operating properly. A new high-efficiency system can significantly reduce electric or gas usage. 8. Which manufacturers do you use? Which manufacturer is best?
Finding out the manufacturer a company uses can be helpful in determining the type of system, warranty, and service you will get. For new HVAC systems, Short Pump Heating & Air is a Carrier Factory Authorized Dealer. We believe these Carrier systems are the best products for our customers in terms of quality, service, price, and longevity. Give us a call if you would like to discuss a new Carrier HVAC system for your home.
  9. Will you provide me with clear communication about my HVAC system, how to operate it properly, and tips for making sure the system is operating at its best?
Most good companies will advise on maintenance plan options and properly review finds on any repair call. After a new system is installed, any differences between the old and new system should be reviewed.  The technician maintaining your system should provide tips, identify potential issues, and proactively maintain the system to avoid future problems and costly repairs.
  10. Do you have customer reviews available to read?
Customer reviews can be so helpful and important when choosing a service company. Google, Angie’s List, and Facebook are all good places to locate reviews of a business.  Be sure to do some preliminary research or ask the company if they have any testimonials to share.  A company’s reviews are usually a clear reflection of the quality of service you can expect from the business.
