DIY: Getting Your HVAC Ready For Summer

Posted On: May 10, 2021

Making sure a few things are in order in your home will ensure a less stressful, cool summer!  Short Pump Heating & Air wanted to provide some tips on how to get your air conditioning system prepared for summer or in the event there’s a real issue, time to call a technician and get it fixed before the heat comes.

  1. Check your thermostat – Ask yourself how old your thermostat is and if it might be time to upgrade to a programmable thermostat. Many of the newer thermostats not only provide easier, remote-usage, but also provides insights on more efficient use, saving you money and discomfort on a daily basis.
  2. Check your ductwork for any leaks or wear-and-tear – If you find your home has leaky ductwork, you’re going to end up wasting money running your AC system this summer into areas of your home that don’t really need to constantly be cooled off.
  3. Do a scan around the house and furniture-check for any pieces that may be blocking your air vents. Cold air funneling right into the bottom and back of your couch isn’t going to deliver the coolest results possible.
  4. Change your air filter! We say this a lot but it’s very important for the efficiency of your air conditioning system and avoiding costly repairs down the road.
  5. Remove any items or debris from the outside units to ensure no blockage or wet conditions while your system is trying to keep you cool.
  6. Test out your system. Switch on your system and test your thermostat to ensure it gets down to the desired temperatures at a reasonable rate.  Go out and listen to your outdoor units to make sure they are running properly and quietly.
