Tips to Get Your HVAC System Ready for Spring 2020

Posted On: February 17, 2020

To kick off spring cleaning, homeowners should enjoy opening doors and windows to let fresh air into their homes. In addition to spring cleaning, this is a great time to start thinking about what you can do to prepare your home’s HVAC system for rising temperatures. Here are five easy maintenance tips for you to follow this month:

  1. Seal windows and doors – Inspect your home’s windows and doors and add caulk where necessary. This will help keep cool air inside and hot spring/summer heat outside, as well as save you money on your energy bill and prevent your HVAC system from being overworked.
  2. Remove dirt and debris – Grab a broom or rag and clear off any leaves, sticks, grass clippings or winter dust, dirt and grime from your AC unit. The dirtier and more cluttered your air conditioning unit, the harder it will have to work all summer to keep you cool. Make sure the condensate drain line exiting the home is clear of mulch or dirt.
  3. Inspect and clean or replace air filters – Be sure to check your home’s air filters and change as needed. If your filter hasn’t been changed in several months and/or has visible dust and dirt, it’s time to change it out. A dirty filter can not only cause your system to work harder to cool your home, but increase your energy bill, damage equipment and produce poor air quality for you and your family.
  4. Ensure the unit is level – At least once a year, it’s best to ensure that your HVAC unit is situated firmly and level on the ground or unit pad. Any shift in the ground can cause issues down the road.
  5. Schedule your preventive maintenance – Spring is the BEST time to schedule your preventive maintenance with Short Pump Heating & Air. Before temperatures get too hot, a technician can not only clean your system, but do a thorough inspection and maintenance on your cooling system to help prevent any inconvenient problems when summer rolls around and you start sweating!
