Furnace Repair by Short Pump Heating & AirKeeping your home warm this winter requires a combination of routine HVAC maintenance and awareness of problems that could occur. We have compiled a list of four common furnace issues/repairs that can arise in winter, so you can feel confident in identifying and resolving them!

  1. Dirty filters: This is one of the most common causes of furnace issues. It’s crucial to know how often and how to change your filters and why it’s so important. The filter keeps your air and your furnace clean and your ductwork cleaner. The filter blocks dirt, pollutants, and other allergens in the air. Be sure to check your filters every couple of months to ensure they are clean and helping your system run rather than hurting it.
  2. Furnace not heating: If your furnace is not heating at all, there are a few easy things to check before calling a professional. Make sure the furnace door is properly secured. If the door is loose or off, the furnace will not start. Also, check to ensure all circuit breakers are on and that the thermostat is set properly. If you have a furnace that vents out the side of the house, make sure no leaves, ice, or other debris is blocking the furnace exhaust vent.
  3. Noisy system: While this is a more obvious sign your system is struggling, the reason why is not always clear. A squeaking noise can often mean a blower or inducer motor problem, while a scraping noise can mean there is damage to your blower bearings. If your system is making any noise and the solution is not obvious, call Short Pump Heating & Air, and we’ll send a technician to investigate and resolve!
  4. Finicky thermostat: Sometimes, an issue with your furnace has nothing to do with the furnace itself. Your thermostat controls the information sent to the furnace and how it should function. Problems with the temperature or setting within your thermostat can cause your furnace to malfunction. Call an HVAC technician if you think you’re having issues with your furnace and are unsure if it’s the thermostat or the furnace itself.

While these are a few common issues homeowners face in the winter, there are many more!
